Key Disciplines


Nanjing Agricultural University (NAU), a national key institution of higher learning under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Education, is known at home and abroad for its established disciplines in agriculture and life sciences. It offers balanced and comprehensive undergraduate as well as graduate degree programs in diverse branches of learning such as sciences, economics, management, engineering, humanities and law. The University has been successively designated by the central government as a key university under the “Project 211”, one of the innovation platforms for outstanding disciplines under the “985 Excellence Initiative Project“ and one of the institutions of higher education chosen to develop world-class disciplines under China’s Double First-class Initiative.

NAU’s Crop Science, Agricultural Resources and Environmental Science are incorporated into the Double First-class Initiative disciplines. Eight disciplines are incorporated into Jiangsu Province’s Advantageous Discipline Development Program. They are Agricultural Informatics, Food Science and Engineering, Crop Science, Modern Horticultural Science, Agricultural Resources and Environmental Science, Plant Protection, Veterinary Medicine, Agricultural and Forestry Economics & Management. Seven disciplines are identified as key disciplines by Jiangsu Province during the 13th Five-Year Plan Period (2016-2020). They are History of Science and Technology, Ecology, Animal Science, Grassland Science, Public Administration, Chemistry and Mechanical Engineering.

Four of NAU’s first-level disciplines were rated “A+” in the fourth round of China’s national evaluation of disciplines. They are Crop Science, Agricultural Resources and Environmental Science, Plant Protection and Agricultural and Forestry Economics & Management.  Public Administration was rated “A”, while Food Science and Engineering, Horticulture were rated “A-”.

Eight disciplines are rated among the world’s top 1% according to Essential Science Indicators (ESI). In particular, Agricultural Science and Plant and Animal Science are among the world’s top 0.1%. chemistry,Environmental Science and Ecology, Biology and Biochemistry, Engineering, Microbiology, and Molecular Biology and Genetics are rated among the world’s top 1%.

NAU offers 63 undergraduate degree programs, 30 first-level master’s degree programs, 15 professional degree programs, 17 first-level doctoral degree programs and 15 postdoctoral programs.
